With the 4th of July holiday fast approaching, the Long Beach Fire and Police Departments would like to remind residents, visitors, and staff that all fireworks, including those marked “Safe and Sane,” are ILLEGAL in the City of Long Beach.

The Fire and Police Departments will be out in force the days leading up to and on July 4th to ensure compliance of the Long Beach City Ordinance that bans fireworks. Although both Departments seek voluntary compliance to ensure public safety, this duty often requires strict enforcement of all laws through arrests and citations. Anyone cited or arrested for fireworks violations may be faced with a $1,000 fine, sentenced to jail for six months, or both. The fines and penalties may increase depending on the fireworks’ classification.

Fireworks may be voluntarily disposed at collection bins located at:

  • All fire stations
  • Lifeguard Headquarters 2100 E. Ocean Boulevard, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Any police station

For more information, alerts, advisories, and emergency news please visit www.longbeach.gov/fire, "Like" us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, or contact LBFD Community Services at (562) 570-2525.

If you See Something, Say Something! Call Long Beach Police Dispatch at (562) 435-6711 or 9-1-1 if you observe dangerous or illegal activities.

Together, we can enjoy a safe holiday!

Do you know what your child is doing online? Social media safety for kids & teens
Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Kik, ...most kids and teens use them, but many parents aren’t sure what these apps do or how they might create risk for online bullying, exposure to strangers, or access to inappropriate or upsetting images or language. According to the Pew Research Center, the average American child spends seven hours a day of screen time. Do you know what your child is doing online? Who they’re connecting with?
To demystify the tech and learn to help kids stay safe online, please join us at 6:30pm in the auditorium on Thursday, May 17th for the final session of this year’s Cubberley Parent Education Series, Social Media: Kids & Teens And Online Safety. In this one hour session, we’ll explore and discuss tools and strategies for helping kids engage in social media in ways that are safe, respectful, and fun. We’ll offer practical tips, tools, and strategies for how to set and maintain safe boundaries for online activities, as well as ways to nurture strong family communication and help kids responsibly engage in online communities via social media.
Please RSVP your interest in attending Social Media: Kids & Teens And Online Safety to leahmacpherson@me.com. Each CPES session is created for parents, but kids and teens are always welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you and exploring issues that are important to Cubberley families.

All 9th through 12th grade students who are interested in taking Summer School classes to make up a grade to meet graduation requirements or to fulfill college entrance requirements must register using our online enrollment system.  The online system will be available starting Monday, April 9.  Summer School registration will continue until April 27 at 5 p.m.

Current 8th through 11th graders also have the opportunity to take a Math Summer Bridge course to help prepare them for the course work that they will be studying in the coming school year.  These courses include Pre-Algebra, Pre-Geometry and Pre-Intermediate Algebra.  These courses will be taken for elective credit and the grade issued will be a Pass/No Credit.  This is an excellent opportunity to get a jump start for next year.

Summer School Registration will begin by completing the application online at www.lbschools.net/summer.  After the application is submitted, the student or parent will receive an immediate on screen confirmation that they have registered.  Two weeks after registering, parents and students will be able to view the courses that counselors have selected for your child to take during summer school.  If you would like to discuss the classes needed, please make an appointment with the counselor before May.  Please note that counselors will select summer school courses based on credit recovery needs, “a-g” completion needs or placement in a Math Bridge course.

Dear Middle School Students and Families,

On Wednesday, March 14, Womens March Youth Impower is calling for a school walkout at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes.

LBUSD supports students’ rights to peaceful assembly and free expression, but school is about teaching and learning as priority. Our usual expectations for student conduct will remain in place.

We will provide space on campus for students to assemble peacefully. Cubberley Middle School Students who will be participating in the walkout are expected to meet at the lunch bench area. While there, our Students Council and PTA/Foundation will provide them with the opportunity to sign a poster for the victims of the Parkland, Florida shooting. Students will also be able to create a "Kindness Chain" where students will commit to an act of kindness that they will do within the week.

We ask students not to move off campus, for their own safety and security.

Students should remain respectful of classmates who may not wish to participate, and/or students who may hold opposing views. Teachers will remain in class and will continue with their lessons.

You may see increased staff, School Safety and other law enforcement presence at our local high schools. This
presence is for student and staff protection and safety, not to quell expression.

Currently there are no plans or expectation that elementary students will walkout of class; however, if they would like to participate in the "Kindness Chain" activity, parent volunteers will be available on the primary and secondary side of campus during their first recess.

Wednesday, March 14th is also wear Red, White or Blue for Citizenship Day.

Being a good citizen means:

1. Being respectful of other people and their property

2. Being respectful of school property

3. Following school rules

4. Displaying good character

5. Giving back to the school community or community at large

We encourage all students who are striving to be good citizens to wear red, white and blue.

Thank you,

Mrs. Imbroane

Threat Prevention

Hello, Students and Families.

As we’ve seen in recent weeks, our schools are not immune to the potential threats that so many other schools nationwide have been dealing with.  We appreciate your heightened awareness of this issue, and we continue to encourage everyone in our school communities to report any suspicious information or activity that could impact school safety.

Threats to our schools are not harmless, and they are not funny.  They take valuable resources and time from our school district and the law enforcement agencies who work with us each day to keep our schools safe.  Threats cause anxiety for parents, students and staff, and they can disrupt the important work of teaching and learning.  Students who make threats face consequences that linger long after the threat is made.  We reiterate the Long Beach Police Department’s recent statement about such threats:

“The Long Beach Police Department takes all potential threats of violence very seriously and thoroughly investigates all reported incidents,” Chief Robert Luna said. “Making any kind of threat whether in person or online, is illegal and has serious consequences.”

Those consequences, as we also have seen in recent weeks, can include suspension, expulsion, arrest and potential prosecution under the law.  Students who make threats, even as a “joke,” can quickly find themselves facing the entire range of these consequences.

We urge parents to discuss this matter with their children.  In light of the senseless loss of lives in recent school shootings nationally, it is completely inappropriate and unacceptable to make threats, even as a “joke.”

We have appreciated everyone’s support during this challenging time.  Again, we continue to encourage students, parents and staff to immediately report any information that could impact the safety of others.  With your help, we can continue to provide safe schools and the best possible education for our students.

Sincerely,

Chris

Christopher J. Steinhauser
Superintendent of Schools

Prevención de amenazas

Hola, estudiantes y familias.

Sinceramente,

Chris

National Walkouts and Demonstrations

Hello, students and families.  The Long Beach Unified School District is aware of rumors of planned student protests and/or walkouts at some schools in response to the tragedy in Parkland, Florida.  It appears that at least three major student-led efforts are underway nationally, including on Wednesday, March 14; Saturday, March 24; and Friday, April 20.

Our top priority is to support the needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all. Free political expression and activity is one of the great privileges that we enjoy in this country.  It is a privilege that should be taken seriously and used in a responsible way.  Teachers and administrators here are always glad to see students become interested in any important issues facing our country, and are glad to encourage political participation by students, as long as it is done in a responsible way.

We respect and support the right of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them and welcome the opportunity to work with any student or student group to discuss appropriate and creative ways to do so while at school.

Leaving campus during school hours to participate in political activity is not a safe and responsible way to work for change.  We encourage you to talk to your children about how they may be feeling about this topic, and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. Students attempting to leave campus will not be held at school.  But it’s important to know that disorderly conduct that disrupts school operations is not acceptable, and our usual expectations will remain in effect.

The most responsible way for students to pursue political change is to stay in school during school hours and pursue their political objectives here on campus in an acceptable forum, or wait until after-school hours to participate in political activities off campus.  Opportunities for on-campus expression are being planned at all middle and high school campuses.  In addition, Long Beach will be among the cities holding demonstrations nationwide on Saturday, March 24.  The Long Beach event is planned for 10 a.m. at Bixby Park, located at 130 Cherry Ave. in Long Beach.

Thank you for your continued support.

Christopher J. Steinhauser
Superintendent of Schools

Huelgas y Manifestaciones Nacionales

Hola, estudiantes y familias.

Basic Services -- LCAP Highlights

Dear Friends,

Two weeks ago, we began sharing with you some highlights of our Local Control and Accountability Plan, or LCAP.  We began with a publication titled Academic Excellence.  Today we continue our series of highlights with Basic Services – A Foundation for Excellence.

If the title links to the above documents don’t work, you can also find them at lbschools.net under the Local Control Funding section.

In the coming weeks, we will share additional highlights of the LCAP.

Best regards,

Chris

Dear Cubberley Students & Families,

I am deeply saddened at hearing about yet another act of school violence in our country. Please, if you see or hear something, say something. We owe it to ourselves, our families, our teachers, and our classmates to ensure that school is a SAFE place for all who enter our doors.

At what point will we truly embrace the idea that we need to be kind and respectful to others because people may be struggling with things we do not know about or cannot see? I hope that all who read these words will truly stop and think about how they treat others both at school and in the community.

As we shared with you at the beginning of the school year, if you believe someone is in danger or may be thinking of harming themselves or others, you need to report this information to the school office. You can report anonymously using the bully box or you can ask for a witness statement at the front counter.

State law requires all public schools to create a School Accountability Report Card (SARC). The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about your child's school, which includes:

  • School Description and Mission
  • School Programs and Instructional Materials
  • Opportunities for Parent Involvement
  • Test Results
  • Safety Plan
  • Facilities

We invite you to view the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for your child's school.  You can find your school's SARC here.

Results of the 2017-2018 School of Choice Process for current eighth grade students will be sent home via US Mail this week. Results will also be visible in ParentVue beginning Friday, February 16, at 5:00pm.

Please remember, enrollment is not complete until you intend to a pathway that you have been accepted to. Failure to intend (via ParentVue) and certify by the deadline of 11:59pm Friday, February 23, 2018, can result in the loss of that acceptance.

After viewing your results, if you wish to file an appeal, a link to the form, as well as a paper copy will be available on our website. These forms can also be obtained from your Middle School or K8 Office.

We strongly recommend intending to a pathway while the appeals are being reviewed, as there is no guarantee of an appeal being granted.

For this year, the deadline to file an appeal is the close of business on March 16, 2018. Following that, the next opportunity to apply for a transfer will be April 1, 2019, through the High School Office.

If you have any questions, please call the High School Choice Helpline at (562) 997-8306.

The MS/K-8 Choice Office is aware that there is an error in the program that is locking some students out of selecting electives for each of their choices, and that this is preventing them from completing the application.

Our programming team is working on the issue and we will let you know when it is repaired.

The School of Choice application for sixth grade is not decided on a first come, first served basis. Every family that certifies and completes the application by the deadline will be considered on-time.

Thank you for your patience,

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please remember to be courteous to the neighbors as you are dropping off or picking up your students. We want the community to view Cubberley in a positive light. Please do not block, park in front of, or turn around in our neighbors' driveways. Do not double park in the street, and do not touch or move our neighbors' trash cans or other personal property.

In order to have a successful drop off/pick up experience, parents of 1st - 8th grade students should consider arriving 10-15 minutes before the start/after the end of the school day. Please utilize our two valet drop-offs located on Monogram Ave. and Kildee Ave.

Playground supervision is provided from 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. and 3:05 to 4:00 p.m. (2:30 - 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays). If you are picking up your child more than ten minutes after their dismissal time, please pull up behind the school on Ostrom Ave. to receive them at the gate near the volleyball courts.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Mrs. Imbroane

Dear Cubberley Families,

Students who get picked up at dismissal may wait for their ride in front of the school. If students are going to be waiting after school more than ten minutes, they will be directed to wait on the supervised playground.

Ten minutes after dismissal, parents/guardians may pick up students behind the school near the volleyball courts. This will ensure that our students are supervised and not left alone in front of campus.

All students, if not part of an after school program or sport, should be picked up by 4:00 p.m. at the latest.

Students who walk home or who ride their bike home should leave directly after school if they are not part of an after school program or sport.

Thank you,

Mrs. Imbroane
